doubt, but it has it's own major issues.
I've never seen a product that was as crude as their heads. They must
make them in cottage metal casting industries dotted about the
Southern Italian countryside. Keeping them working correction (to
avoid binding or slack spots in the rotation, set-screws coming lose,
etc, is a major undertaking. Comparing their stuff to something like
Gitzo is like comparing a Kodak P&S to a Canon FF. The only saving
grace about Manfrotto is that it is metal and it is cheap, other than
that, a guy with Nicholson file and a blindfold could make better
bearing surfaces than the ones of their products.
But I disagree with your comments re binding/slack.
I've used a fair few Manfrottos, and while they are not Gitzos they ARE perfectly usable, reliable tripods + heads... a bit heavy but solid and stable.
Value for money wise they are a good investment and generally last a long time.. bits that fall/break off are usually fixable/replaceable too.
Cheaper stuff is mostly plastic crap - Manfrotto are 'proper' kit.
There are better heads 'n' legs BUT at a hefty price.
Guy
There's only one thing around here that needs a new head, and "its" name is Rich.
Probably needs new legs, too.
