I went through two K10Ds with several problems, including this one,
before I swapped it for a D80.
What lens were you using on the K10Ds?
For some the lens mattered, for others it didn't. There is clearly a
manufacturing/mechanical/design/firmware issue that is affecting a
small percentage of K10D's. Google "K10D auto focus problem" and
while there are obviously plenty of people posting with cameras and
lenses that are not at fault, this is not the case with some of
them. Worse, I don't know of any Pentax repair shop in NYC that
prepared to troubleshoot the model. PhotoTech says Pentax still
hasn't supplied them with info or materials. User needs to ship back
to Pentax.
Not that other cameras don't have these kinds of quirks that create
urban myths. People are still debating whether their D80's have
broken metering or if XTi's have exposure problems. I'm not bashing
it, it's a great camera. But this an actual problem which gets poo
poo-ed because probably at least 90% of them don't have it.
