AF point and evaluative metering

Hi everyone!
When I bought my Rebel XT, I had problems with focussing properly. I was
told that this was due to the fact I had *all* AF points "alive", and that
the camera was mixing things up. This was discussed a few times in this
forum with the main advice being to keep the central AF point only.
Today, I was reading up on photography with respect to metering. In the
"Magic Lantern Guide" for the Canon XT, the author states: "The main
advantage of Evaluative metering is that the exposure is biaised towards the
*active* AF points."
What I read into this is that if *all* AF points are active, the light
reading might be more complete VS only a central AF point where only the
light around that point will be measured.
Am I right to assume this? What is the *right* approach re. only *one* AF
point VS *all*?
Thanks,
Marcel
