Right now if you buy a Mactel you will have to dual boot into WinXP and buy
WIndows software to do any useful work. There are no comparable programs
that run natively on the Mactel OS. If you do so you will be paying a
premium for mid-level hardware with a substandard warranty. OSX software
runs only slowly through a kludge that converts it to be compatible with the
Mactel OS.
The biggest bang for the buck right now is in dual core Athlon CPUs. The
newest Intel dual core CPUs, such as the Mactel uses, are catching up but
still lag behind AMD cpus in the price/performance evaluation. If you are a
gamer most Intel boxes will use an Intel/ATI chipset that limits you to the
ATI crossfire system which is clearly inferior to the Nvidia SLI dual card
system. There are motherboards for Intel dual core CPUs that have an Nvidia
chipset and use the SLI system but you will only see these from custom
builders or you have to build it yourself.
There are many excellent sources to buy PCs with awesome performance at
amazing prices with extremely high quality components apart from the big
names like Dell, Gateway, HP etc. They will outperform anything with an
Apple logo at a fraction of the price and with a better warranty.
In any event unless Apple releases the Mactel OS as a standalone product,
and all this would require would be drivers for the variouls Intel/NVidia
chipsets, that product is dead in the marketplace.
