Before all, as you know, speaking and writing are two different arts: when
I write, I translate my thoughts from Italian to English and, doing this,
I have
all the time I need. On the opposite, listening to people speaking english
means, first of all, that my mind should be very fast in translation and
morever I should have acquainted a comprehensive mental dictionary.
That's alright. You'll be in Miami. If you speak slowly, and they speak
slowly, you'll understand the Spanish, and they'll understand your Italian.
=)
(In case anyone takes that as a joke, it's surprising how many speakers of
Italian I can communicate with by speaking Spanish. For French, I have to
see it written to understand it.)
In other words, the best should be thinking in English!!
I learned Spanish by living in a Spanish-speaking country for two years,
so I learned to think in it as I learned to speak in it. I can't translate
between the two very well at all, because most of the ideas are so
completely different.
