You shouldn't have to - it's been quite capable of doing it itself for a
number of years - you need only to switch the feature on. Additionally, if
you wish, you can very easily administer it from anywhere in the world using
the built in tools (use NetMeeting with Remote Desktop Sharing (conf.exe)
for Win2K and Remote Desktop Connection if it's a WinXP box).

"Grandmom Sixpacks" aren't all running on 2K or even XP. This happens
to be is an old ME box on dialup and a 13" CRT. Its adequate for her
to check email 2x/week.


Best solution (in addition to turning on auto-updates) is to route their
mail via an ISP that does virus & spam removal.

Already done long ago.

The real problem stems from other than email: a young grandkid for
whom the PC is used for entertainment, usually at spyware-laden kid
game sites. If it tries to do a scheduled Anti-Malware update when
she's online, she'll cycle hardware power to interrupt it, and other
similarly highly beneficial actions.
