It took DECADES before the industry was willing to accept something other
than steel as a frame material. Tradition/momentum are tough to overcome.
But eventually the truth wins out, and people realize hey, there *are* other
ways to do this, just because we've always done it one way doesn't mean it's
the only (or even the best) way.
You can build a great bike out of aluminum, steel, carbon fiber, titanium...
probably other materials too, but they might not be financially practical.
We now have choices, and a side benefit to the newer materials is that
they've made those working with steel re-think the old standard and come up
with newer, stronger steel alloys... alloys easily twice the strength of
what we used to use. So those who want something traditional get a better
"traditional" product than would otherwise have been the case, and those who
want to take advantage of the superior strength-weight ratios and
vibration-damping characteristics found in carbon products have that choice
too.
