It certainly wasn't a problem for me.

For me, newsgroups are a wonderful tool for sharing information, and
although in theory one might expect to get the best answers from a group
that deals specifically with the issue in question - in practice I often
find that I get better answers from people who use particular products is
particular ways - my most recent example being a photoshop question: I
didn't get anywhere posting on a photoshop newsgroup, but got the answer
here.

Again, speaking personally, if I have an issue I need help with then I
reserve the right to ask whatever group I feel has the best chance of
helping me. I don't consider it to be "off topic" per sec - and I don't
believe that, done responsibly, it creates any issues worthy of mention -
especially in a very quiet group such as this.
