We had this discussion a few weeks back.

Figures show that the modern microdrives are fast, and a lot more reliable
than they used to be.

Reliability (or rathr lack of) seemed to be the first thing that most
mentioned - it also seemed however that most of the negative comment came
from those who'd never used them <Hmmm>.

Like any electromechanical device it's more likely to last longer if treated
well - what intrigued me the most was how the cameras are certainly more
delicate than the microdrives - so if folks are worried that what they're
doing might cause a drive to fail, then gawd help the camera!

Possibly the biggest valid point is that they do consume considerably more
battery juice.

END OF SUMMARY :)

I'm tempted to try the 4 gig microdrive. Save changing cards in
midstream with the 2 gig CF, but...why not a 4 gig CF? Price? I haven't
checked recently.

My only fear with the drive is a simple one: what happens if I drop it
when removing it from the camera over an asphalt or concrete base? That
isn't going to hurt the camera slung around my neck, but it might not
do the drive any good. I can tell you from experience it doesn't hurt
any Compact Flash I have. And yes, I should be more careful, but
arthritis in my hands sometimes makes all the care in the world
useless. Not always, but enough that I try to use both hands for a lot
of jobs I used to do with two or three fingers.

If you ever drop a microdrive onto concrete, picking it up is a pointless act of wishful thinking.
