With firewall routers so cheap, another solution is to
simply put the router between the internet and your
computer.
I use a Linksys box which internally runs linux and a
firewall. I don't use it as a router.
If you want to be even more finicky, you can connect the
router to the computer and set the firewall settings to
suit yourself. *Then* plug the firewall into the network
and download patches.
And you can even be more sneaky. I have an ISP that allows
shell accounts. Right now I'm reading this newsgroup
on *their* machine. I read my e-mail the same way.
