Assuming the non-IS is optically equivalent, they are very soft at the
long end, particularly with apertures. It also has some purple
fringing towards the edges. The AF is a bit slow, and doesn't allow
full-time manual focus. The new 70-300mm IS USM should hopefully
improve on at least some of these points. I don't know how much
difference that UD element will do, but considering the price
difference, I'd certainly expect something to be better.
