I think it's pretty much implied that RAW conversion ignores in-camera processing in every case.

Well, you're going on about detail-destroying noise reduction as if it actually matters. Who's going to buy a D2x and then shoot JPEGs? If you shoot RAW, it's not mandatory; you can even disable it in Nikon Capture's conversion, apparently.

If you're not using the noise reduction... you're stuck with the noise.

A lot of people shoot straight to JPEG, for reasons good or bad. I'm not going to question their choices, but shouldn't they have the option to turn the noise reduction ALL the way off.

I'm not saying it's totally awful, but it isn't in the league of other pro DSLRs. Since high ISO shooting is a big advantage in the digital world, I'd expect a lot out of expensive cameras in terms of noise performance.

If all you need is up to ISO 800, Nikon does just fine. Beyond that it's not real gain anyway, just pushed in post-processing, so 800 should be considered as high as it goes.

So you're admitting the Canon DSLRs have an extra stop on the D2X? That's basically all I'm saying.

I'll step in here as a new owner of a D2X and long time (as in a nine months) owner of a 1D Mk II and (12 months) 20D cameras. I have long known that images from a D100 Nikon at 400 ISO are quite noisy. I also know this noise is amazingly easy to remove with neat image and once removed, produces a more detailed image than a 10D or 20D does at the same ISO.

Prints I've made at 600x900 (MM) from very small (2.5 megabyte JPGs shot at 400 ISO) out of the local newspaper's (Nikon) cameras are as clear and detailed (after neat image)as 10D full size files enlarged to the same size. http://www.technoaussie.com/images/examples.jpg

Moreover, Nikon image from D100 cameras at 400 ISO can be interpolated up to larger sizes with more detail than a 10D images. I have yet to push a D2X image past 900 mm x 1200mm but at that size the Nikon images are sharper, clearer and more detailed than from my 1D,II. For my use, they also have more natural looking colour than any Canon image I have ever seen.

The D2X is a direct rival of the 1D, not the 1Ds so any attempt by anyone to claim the Nikon is not the equal of a 1Ds is just trying to make an argument when none is valid. The camera competing in the same price range and is also a Professional camera with a D2X is a 1D MkII.

I have some unanswered questions about the true resolution of the D2X's sensor but this does not affect my judgment of the camera's image quality compared to the 1D,II Canon and 20D. My opinion is formed by using all three cameras under the same conditions both before I bought the Nikon and after.

Yes, the Nikon is a little noisier than the Canon's at High ISO but like I said of D100's; The noise is very easily removed, resulting in a much more detailed image than any of my Canon cameras. The problem Canon have is their "we know what's best for you" Attitude. Nikon at least let the photographer decide more of what they want than Canon do.

As for 800+ ISO, The Canon images are so 'in-camera' de-noised as to have what fine detail may be extractable with more powerful software, destroyed before ever you get to decide if the look is favorable or not. Canon's ISO beyond 800 is faked anyway.

Christ Brian... Haven't you learn't yet not to feed the trolls?
