That's the rub. The astronomical eyepieces don't fit the microscopes
from back when. Astro eyepieces come in three barrel sizes, 0.96",
1.25" and 2." Microscope eyepieces are slightly smaller than 0.96"
Newer microscopes carry larger diameter eyepieces, but they still
don't match, so adapters are needed.
But compared to those ancient Huygens-style microscope eyepieces,
they kill them. You can purchase a set of decent Plossl eyepieces
for about $80 so they are definitely a bargain.
Last time I checked out Zeiss's latest compensating eyepieces for
their modern scopes, they were over $500/ea.
