I'm worried about my corn snake. He won't eat...hasn't eaten in over 2
months. At first I thought it was him coming out of brumation and looking
to mate, but he's gone through one shed and now is about to go through a
second without having eaten. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with
him....he's alert not frail or anything. How long can a snake go without
eating?
He has eaten frozen (thawed) mice and now rats his entire life. I've put
rats in over the past few weeks and he's come out to "sniff" but never to
eat.
They can go a /long/ time without eating, many months if they are not
under stress. If they are otherwise behaving normally, I wouldn't
fret too much about it and offer him something every two weeks or so.
If nothing else has changed in his environment, you might consider
offering him a smaller, less hairy and warmer critter to eat - e.g.
rat fuzzy.
Also, if he's not too old, but just old enough, I've noticed my guys'
food consumption went way down at around 2-3 years. I assume it's
because they have stopped growing as quickly as they do initially, and
are sexually mature - they are eating less than half of what they did
their first few years.
I wouldn't worry unless he starts losing condition, or goes into the
autumn without eating, in that case, I'd see a vet.
