I give my dogs flat strips of rawhide.
We do not recommend rawhides for a few reasons.
1. They are known to harbor salmonella. This is mostly a concern for the
people who handle them.
2. They are not highly digestible.
3. We've had patients die from choking on pieces.
4. They are not necessary. If your dog wants to chew, get one of those
large hemp ropes knotted at both ends. The loose fibers on the ends even
act as floss.
Why not just a big connon bone to chew on?
I cut them in half after he's taken all the tendons, meat, anything left
on the outside, and feed him the marrow on the inside.
He loves like it, it's the best treat in the world to him he even sits
nice and patient while I cut and dig it out with a spoon. He gives me
(smiles) literally lifts his top lip and looks to smile at me, he does
this when I say it's ok he can eat now too.
Funniest, cutest thing in the world too see a pit bull smile but I cant
get him to do it to the camera.
Is that the same as a beef marrow bone? I give them to Muttley all the
time, and today I got five of them at Food Lion for $0.99/lb. He does a
good job of getting the marrow out, and then he gnaws on the bone itself
for quite a while. It keeps him busy and I think it's good for his teeth,
and satisfies his natural instincts to gnaw and chew on bones. I might
consider cutting the longer ones in half, but then I would let him get the
marrow out himself. But bones are very hard to cut, and messy. Butchers
have a band saw made for the purpose, probably with a carbide blade.
Paul and Muttley
cause if you do it with the back of the axe it leaves sharp bits I dont like
him breaking off.
He tries to lick the marrow out but hurts his tounge and never gets the real
juicy stuff out.
