The results certainly benefit you, too, especially if you do
any sporting events with your dog, or hikes, or anything which
requires a hip-healthy dog, like a long and healthy life. If
it's bad news, it's good to know as soon as possible.
What is your experience with this?
Not much - after my first dog, I've always had my their hips
checked for laxity, but my current puppy (almost 12 months
old) will be OFAed. She is on limited registration, so no
breeding will be happening, and the breeder does not require
an OFA, but I budgeted it, so will share it with her.
FWIW, the majority of the expense of an OFA evaluation comes
because of the general anesthetic. There are a couple of ways
to mitigate this expense: I'm having my puppy spayed at the
same time, for example. I've also heard of dogs who'll lie
still long enough without a GA (I think this was one of
Diddy's dogs), so YMMV.
