Throw in some unparsable grammar and you can join the 21st
century, too (er, 2)! I *hate* technology!!
Melville Dewey (*that* Dewey) was interested in developing a
more efficient spelling system, and over time he did develop
a writing system that was basically phonetic. He wrote the
introductions to his later classification systems in his
abbreviated spelling, and they're pretty much
unintelligible. The thing that's striking about the
IM-style writing is that it's got to be pretty inaccessible
to someone who's not a native English speaker and
particularly someone whose knowledge of English is largely
written.
Some years ago I was in Paris and finally met face-to-face
with someone I'd been corresponding with for a few years.
This is a German whose written English is superb - extremely
idiomatic - but who had never really heard much spoken
English. So one of the things she asked was about the word
"geek": is it pronounced with a hard 'g', or with a soft
'g' (zheek)?
