I love the fact that it doesn't matter (much) in Rally that Ranger has
been doing crooked fronts for a decade. (Yes, diddy, we're doing the
swivel chair exercise and it's better, but not "best" yet.)
i was really surprised when it didn't matter much that i had to ask my
dog to sit 87 times at our last trial. huh? lol
the more i think about the way this class is structured, i wonder if
my attention troubles wouldn't be better served by the novice class. i
know the rally signs. i know how to run a course. my problems are more
basic than any of that.
There's also the relief of going into the Rally ring and having it seem
easy, because you've been working on more attention, more precision,
more accuracy and you can just relax and be goofy when you show <g>.
well, since we're running is excellent level courses (and mean ones at
that!) crammed into a significantly smaller than standard ring,
running a novice rally course in a standard size ring should be a
breeze, eh? ;)
i was getting frustrated yesterday. he'd set up beautifully, fantastic
eye contact, right there ready to go. i'd cue him to heel, take a
step, and he'd be bolting out in front of me, all attention gone.
what's up with that? it was better by the time class ended, but it is
*so* reminiscent of luce and i'm sure it's me, but i'm not sure what
i'm doing or have done to make this happen with both dogs.
On reading this, get yourself into a basic obedience class. ONE command.
Then fix it.
No body language. No nonsense. It sounds as if you give a command, and she
thinks the first one is optional, then the second. And it becomes arbitrary
which one he chooses to obey. If any.
It sounds as if your handling skills are in much greater need than the
dog's. The attention will come when he realizes that he had better obey,
because there are consequences if he opts not to.
