Dearest Teacher & Mentor-Jerry Howe,
I cannot begin to tell you HOWE far Aeriel (17 months old Basinji-mix)
has come
since I started the 'Noise Distraction/Praise' Method has changed our
lives!!
Aer-Bear (Aeriel's) 'SEVERE FEAR ANXIETY/SEPERATION ANXIETY'-just from
that ONE technique, the change in just a few short weeks is nothing
short of Miraculous!!
She is an Eager Learner-doing 'tricks' I never even THOUGHT of, or was
going to teach her!! I use the (above) technique, along w/ verbally
'Naming' Everything', AND 'sign language'...& she has (in just a FEW
WEEKS) gone from an EXXXTremely AnXXXHOWsE puppy (Who was INJURING
herself due 2 her AnXXXHOWEity) to a Calm, Happy, Obedient, Eager to
Learn little fur-child daughter!!
The 'Walks' outside w/the 'Big Scary Cars & People' (we use a
'harness' & attach a lead 2 it) was IMPOSSIBLE w/out Aeriel having a
COMPL:ETE MELTDOWN a few weeks ago.
NOW, (and we've only done this TWICE-mind you-the 1st time on an early
Sunday morning {we live on 'Main Street' also, which makes it VERY
difficult for her-when we had the huge 'snowbanks', they blocked the
sight of the 'SCARY CARS' between the sidewalk & street-since they
melted, forget it!! She won't go anywhere TOWARD the end of the
driveway/sidewalk-only in the VERY back, between the Garage &
Fence} )
UNTILL....NOW!!!
Sunday, AUGUST 10th, 2008 very EARLY AM (very quiet)
We started SLOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW....I diddn't have my 'penny can' w/me,
so I 'threw my keys' (praying they wouldn't get lost in the grass, or
in the street & get 'SQUASHED' ERGO: we would have never gotten back
inside, & I wouldn't be writing this).
When (which was nearly Constantly the 1st few minutes) she would
'Freak out' and have an 'Anxiety Meltdown', I'd throw the keys,
(Interupting her 'Meltdown'), and immediatly 'PRAISE' her for her
'Skiddishness'!!
Eventually, we got to the point (there is a big tree, and several big
bushes) she got the 'courage' to actually lay IN FRONT (instead of
hide behind, or try to 'take off'-which she made me fall at least
once-
*Throw Keys* "GOOD GIRL!!!!! Good for making Mommie *ouch* Fall and
*oooowwwww* skin her knee!! *OUCH!!....* 'What GOOD 'Skiddish-Fear'
behaviour that was!! Mamma's *ow* sooooo Proud!!"
She was to the point of actually LYING DOWN on the grass in front of
the bushes on a totally slack leash (I was sitting next to her)-she
was 'Eating the Grass' (her 'nervous habit' w/new scary stuff since
she started learning 'HOWE' not to be so ascared)
Each time a car went by, I'd say "Caaaarrrrrrr! Goooooood Aerie!!
What a Goooood Bear!!* while pointing/following w/my finger as it
(they) went by....also named 'grass' she ate, trees, pavement,
parkinglot, cars, trash, fences, etc.
"Signed & Named" 'Eye Contact', 'Sit/stay', down/stay, Slooooowwww
walk, trot, 'sniff', 'Stand Stay'; etc. etc. etc.......
We actually walked part of the way down the sidewalk (this was the
FIRST OUTSIDE TRY, mind you) to where she 'went' to do
'Potty' (tinkles) & 'Doodles' (#2) in the Winter, when we had the
'safety snowbank'-SHE led ME there!!
Once she say a person walking toward her, she had a 'Panic Attack
Anxiety Meltdown BOLT HOME NOW!!!!!' attack-but threw the KEYS,
praise, etc. we were
back in the 'safe' doorway of our apt (in back on side of a 3 family
house).
I thought that was 'it', but got down, and petted her, 'baby talked'
her, etc. till she calmed down, and we ended up starting in the
'back' (where she feels 'SAFE') and eventually going up the driveway
again!! She even went up on the front porch w/me to get my mail!!
THIS WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!! I was totally THUNDERSTRUCK!!!!
????is this REALLY Aeriel, or did someone 'switch a well behaved
clone' when I wasn't looking????
Last Night-Friday, August 15th, 2008-Late at night right before some
of the 'Bars' closed(1AM) & got out-like @ around 12:45 AM:
Took her out-did MUCH BETTER than Sunday!! Traffic/noise was worse,
but only a FEW 'Key' tosses, EXTREMELY nearly ALWAYS SLACK LEASH!!!!!
(almost NO 'Tugging' this time-AMAZING!!!!!!)
Except when we were on the sidewalk, walking back from her ( 'winter
'DOODLE' spot down the street)-we had almost reached the end of our
Driveway, when a car pulled up to drop someone off-
*TERROR!! CAR + SCARY UNKNOWN PERSON-FLEEEEEEE!!! GET THE H*** OUTA
DODGE NOW!!!!!!* +'TUG!!!!!" "DANGER DANGER DANGER!!! ARE BLOCKING
ROUTE TO SAFE HOME!!!!! FREAK OUT!!!!!!*
Threw keys (sound/distraction) Praise...
Thank God-the guy walked the other way, and the car left right away,
though we did take a 'shortcut' through the DARK neighbors bushes/yard
-
kept throwing keys, and praising-was worth bushes/trees/growth, etc.
she was AWESOME!!!!!!
After 'Scary Car & Person' left, were back in Driveway (now a 'safer
zone') (BTW-she's still 'eating grass' when new/nervous scaries come
up-but is doing GREAT-and 'grazing' (laughed last night-said, "Aerie-
Your NOT a cow, ya know, silly girl")
Grazing is OK w/me!! ;-) Mabye should try it myself next time I get
'anxious'-JK.
Except for a stranger or two walking down the street, everything went
BEYOND
anything I could have EVER hoped for!!
AND...........(the outside stuff).........
ALL IN ONLY A FEW HOURS w/ ONLY TWO (2) TRIES.......IN......
LESS THAN A WEEK!!!!!!!
(Never mind the INDOOR stuff, which will write about later).
THIS IS AMAZINGLY INCREDIBLE!!!!!!
