but i think luce is looking at two more knee surgeries, not just one.
i'm afraid she's torn the meniscus in the knee she had repaired last
summer. this afternoon she swam a little, walked a little, and took a
tiny jump off the dock, and she's so lame on both legs it makes me
want to cry hysterically.

i hate this. i hate this i hate this i hate this. she wants to play
and be a dog but then she pays for it later.

i don't know how i'm going to afford two knee surgeries.

three weeks until our consult with the surgeon and surgery.

i literally want to barf right now.

Oh, no...

Okay, first thing, don't panic.

As you've said yourself, for Luce, rimadyl and rest. There's no harm in waiting a few weeks and there's one huge benefit - you get to see if it gets better.

I am incredibly grateful that there was no way to immediately get our Scully the TPLO operation that FREAKIN' COLUMBIA recommended. A couple weeks of hanging fire let me see that it was getting better. A torn ligament doesn't get better. If I'd been able to follow the advice I'd received immediately I'd have subjected my dog to completely unnecessary surgery.

I would also suggest alternating ice packs and moist heat to the affected joints and gentle passive range of motion exercise.

For you, exercise and sleep. The former will help with the latter. You're not doing either of you any good when your brains is going like a hamster on a wheel. When you push yourself hard enough to make yourself breath hard and sweat, you're burning off the panic chemicals (primarily adrenaline) that make it so hard to think straight. I do my best, hardest thinking when I'm on my bike.

If you're still having problems sleeping you can take up to 75 mg of benadryl (3 tabs). If it makes you feel groggy and hung over the next day, call your doc, explain the situation and see if he won't give you a 'script for some Lunesta. Your mouth will taste like the bottom of a litterbox the next morning but, god, it gives good sleep.
