Sorry to hear about your FIL, Nick. A few years ago, I had some foot
surgery and wasn't allowed to put any weight on my foot for 5+ weeks.
While it wasn't a grave illness or injury, it was a PITA and more
difficult than I anticipated. I chose early January, figuring being
stuck home by the fire in front of HGTV or with some books was not all
that bad. For the dogs, it could have been. DH left for work in the
dark and returned in the dark, so he wasn't a lot of help in exercising
them. My MIL came to help out, but her Floridian blood wasn't up to
going out in the yard for very long. So, I bundled up, wheeled my
wheelchair out to the yard and with my trusty Chuck-it, threw the ball
over and over and over and over and over and over an over.

Fetch really does rock.

I can't recommend what to do in your case, but if you go for the joint replacement make sure they replace the entire joint and not half of it. ...
