Our dogs have, as it happens, dictated their feeding schedule, which
also happens to be very convenient to us. So if it works (and TD has
indicated that there's not a bowl-raiding issue anymore) what's the
problem?

Someday, it will be likely that a dog must eat something put in front of
them, for a health reason. Starting good habits early means when life
throws you a curveball, it's easier to catch.

Not only do my dogs eat their food as presented, but they eat whatever
pills I toss on top as well. Makes the possibility of them needing
medication a whole lot simpler.

I think there are a number of behavioral reasons why we should expect a
dog to eat as presented, and I think there are a number or potential
health benefits as well.

Merlin does eat on a regular schedule, it simply doesn't coincide with
Gracie's. Gracie likes to eat the moment I go downstairs to turn on my
coffee pot. She follows me around the kitchen, *saying* "Is it time to eat
now momma?" "I hope momma isn't going to forget my breakfast." "Oh, oh, I
think she's forgotten!" and when I finally open the pantry door, where
their food, bowls, etc., are kept, she says whoppie, she's not forgotten!"
'yippie, yippie, momma's getting breakfast now." She knows she has to *sit*
and *wait* until I've filled both bowls and given her the 'all clear' signal
to go ahead and begin her breakfast.

Merlin, on the other hand, is a slow riser. Much like me. ;-) He's not a
'morning person'. He prefers going outside first, laying in the sun,
checking out his yard, and eating a bit later, when he knocks at the door to
come back in again. They both go out first thing in the morning, when daddy
gets up for work, so it's not like they 'need' to go outside. Daddy lets
them out to do their business when he gets up, and then they both come back
to bed to sleep another couple hours until I get up.

Gracie is totally and completely proofed. She never touches Merlins bowl
when it has food in it. When they are both done eating they will check out
each others bowls to be sure neither of them forgot a morsel. But when the
bowls are full, they don't touch each others food. They know they aren't to
do that.

I don't have any trouble pilling either of them. With my Murphy being quite
ill, I became an expert 'piller'. I never put pills in food or anything. I
simply slip them down their throats.
