But anyway, are you planning on hunting ducks yourself, or
how does this work? I've seen field trials on TV and
haven't been able to follow exactly what was going on, other
than the retrieval part (i.e. how the dead ducks ended up in
the water, etc.). I.e. are you and your husband becoming
outdoorspeople, or were you before and I just didn't notice?
No hunting, just hunt tests. The dead ducks end up in the water because
they are shot over the water, or sometimes, dead ducks are "winged" over
the water (with a "duckapult" or winger). Same way they wind up on
land. WC/WCX and hunt tests (JH/SH/MH) are a combo of land and water
marks.
I find working with dogs who love to do this is pretty cool. The
instinct is amazing, and to see how some dogs just have better marking
ability naturally, is fascinating. Obviously, training is a huge part
of a dog's working ability, but they have to have something to begin
with.
Access to appropriate land and water is one of the hardest parts of
training. Yard work is beneficial of course, but it isn't like a large
field and pond, or some that are actually specifically designed for
training and tests.
