I also noticed that the article recommends the fluoxetine PLUS a
training program.
I can only speak of what I know, and that has to do with Pan's SA. SA
cannot be fixed with drugs alone. They might take the edge off, but the dog
is not given a coping mechanism to deal with the underlying anxiety. In
some dogs, the anxiety is so severe and their anxiety levels so high that
behavior modification alone is not able to make a dent. The dog's state of
mind just does not allow it. The idea behind the drug/training combo is
that the drug will reduce the level of the anxiety, and the behavior mod
will give the dog a coping mechanism, something that cannot be accomplished
by either, alone.
That's what happened with Pan. I am fairly certain that her SA is hard
wired, and that this is not a monster created by poor handling. She had SA
at 8 weeks, and would hurt herself trying to get to her human, which is most
certainly not normal. Her owner tried desensitization, counter conditioning
and behavior modification for months on end with very little progress. With
Clomicalm and behavior mod, there was progress, albeit a slow one. She was
on the meds for a long time and was very slowly weaned off it, but the
behavior mod stuck, to a great degree. She isn't a normal dog, and never
will be. She is not the basket case she was either.
