I had an old friend who I just hooked up with again recently online ask
aloudif I was still with my husband 'out of habit'. I thought that a very
strange question to ask, and quite sad.
That is sad.
My boss and friend Richard is a recent empty nester. I'm so gratifiied to
see how newlywed he and his wife seem- they are very cute. I worried
to him because while mike and I are fine, we are less connected to each
other and more connected to the monk right now. Richard reassured me all
was as it should be, and that when the monk told us to get lost we'd
reconnect again. Or at least, thats what happened for him and Laurie.
I think so too. When the kids are young, they seem to monopolize all your
free time. Everything is centered around them. I do think though that you
have to keep some sort of connection to each other. With us, we both have
great senses of humor. Even when the kids were little, we did a lot of
teasing, playing, having fun together. Play practical jokes on each other.
Once the girls got a little older, they were usally in on 'em. That way as
they get older, you can rekindle that connection again a bit easier. Plus,
once you finally get 'em all out of the house, and finally have some peace,
quiet and privacy once again, you are ready for it. We still tease all the
time. Now that we live next door to Robin and Craig, we still having sort
of running jokes ongoing. Our garage is a side entry, and it faces their
house. I mean, it's on that side of our property. We have our freezer and
an extra fridge in the garage. The kids are always 'dropping by' to get
drinks out of the fridge or frozen pizzas out of the freezer. Tracey and
Chayton are there quite a lot since Wayne died last year. So anyway, we all
got to talking one afternoon and they told me they refer to our garage as
'the store'. They'll tell Chaton and Jake to 'run over to grandma's *store*
and get some cokes out of the fridge, or a pizza out of the freezer. So
Robin was telling me, one evening when craig got home from work he went out
their front door and came right back in again. She asked him 'what he was
doing?' and he said "He was going to get himself a beer but the 'store was
closed', meaning the garage door was down. Well that just cracked us up,
Richard and me. We thought it was a hoot. I mean, we don't mind, that's
why we keep the freezer and fridge stocked. It's not easy on any of them,
Tracey losing Wayne and Robin not working, staying home to care for Jake and
the twins. But we didn't know they'd actually dubbed our garage 'the
store'. Another time Richard and I were just sitting down to dinner and I
asked him 'if he'd closed the garage door?" He said 'no, why?' And I
replied, 'well you know if you don't put that door down, pretty soon the
'riff raff' will be coming in, and as if on cue, Robin and Jake walked into
the kitchen through the garage door. I mean, we literally spit our drinks
out as that door opened. It was like some sit com scene. So we had to
explain what had just transpired, our conversation and how we'd just about
gotten it out when they came in. So then Robin went into this whole fake
martyr routine......."so that's what we are, riff/raff, yadda yadda yadda."
Humor, teasing, playing, having fun, it keeps a marriage/relationship fresh
and unpredicable, interesting. It's like I just told Robin today, when she
complained that by night time she's so tired, she and craig hardly have any
time together anymore. By the time the kids are all in bed, she just wants
to take her shower and get in bed. So I said, 'you and Craig should set
aside at least 15 minutes, after you shower, to snuggle a little and talk,
even if it's just as you are settling in to doze off. Just make sure you
have that little bit of time together each night, to keep the connection
alive in your busy lives.
Okay, I'll pull my shingle in now and close the store. ;-) Dr. Dancer is
out of the office.
