I doubt there's a Jewish kid of my generation who didn't have
Holocaust nightmares when they were young.
Talk about bad dreams!
We read (some version of) Anne Frank's diary in 4th grade. On the
one hand, I think it was good timing, but on the other, it was sort
of mishandled. Our teacher didn't really explain what concentration
camps were, or why Jews would be forced into hiding. It was entirely
without context. I vividly remember her describing how Anne was
treated "like a dog," when she was finally sent to Bergen-Belsen. My
9yo mind conjured up an image of a chain-link kennel and kids being
forced to eat out of bowls on the ground.
That said, it hasn't put me off of blueberries, and I still
intend to eat them.
I am a blueberry free zone. For whatever that's worth.
