Is her gait normal when she runs?
Well, it's never been *normal*, but it's changed. She now
throws her legs out to the side more when we're warming up.
They track back under her body as we get going but for the
first mile or so she kind of looks like she's going to poop
on the run (where she also has a very wide stance behind).
When she's highly motivated she looks perfectly normal, for
example she does her dinner happy-time dance of sproinging
in the air when I first bring the dishes into the room.
The vet's been looking for things like draggy toes.
Any sensitivity in the rear? With lumbosacral stenosis, or canine
cauda equina syndrome, there's a spot along the lumbosacral spine
where just a little pressure will cause the back end to sort of drop.
Any
muscle loss in the rear end?
That's a good point - no, there hasn't been any muscle
loss.
Is her spine straight when she stands, or sort of slope like a GSD
towards the rear? Dragging toes are a sign of LS as well. Does she
have trouble getting up, or just lying down? And if the answer to all
these questions is no, and she doesn't have cauda equina, at least
that's one thing that can be ruled out.
I didn't realize that NSAIDs sometimes don't work for
neurological pain. Interesting.
Well, let me qualify (I shouldn't post after 10 pm) - they don't work
for the sort of neurological pain caused by lumbosacral stenosis. One
site says oral meds don't seem to work for this - prednisone did
nothing for Boomer or Matty, though apparently most vets will at least
try it. Depo-Medrol injections into the muscles along the spine often
help. We did have Boomer on NSAIDs for a while, not for the
anti-inflammatory effect by just for analgesia, and it did seem to
give him some relief for a period of time. This condition is likened
to doggy sciatica.
Mystery illnesses are so frustrating.
