I don't think that it is a "screwup" to leave a child and a dog together
alone. Some (many?) people may disagree, but I know how hard it is to
keep an eye on everything in a house with walls, never mind separate floors.

I shouldn't have to explain what I mean, but some people will, I suppose
want to make me since they like to be argumentative. Then they will tell
me that I shouldn't answer the 'phone or the door or watch TV since that
takes my attention away from what is important.

Any time you have a dog capable of causing lethal damage to a child,
and this goes far beyond breeds, most breeds are capable of lethal
damage to children. But any time you leave the dog and child
unsupervised, or "look away" you just screwed up. You made a mistake
because you caused an unnecessary risk to that child's life. It
depends on the dog, and it depends on the child. But there are ages
of children that should never be left alone with any dog. Case in
point, a pomeranian killed a baby when the parents left the baby on
the bed with the pomeranian and went into the other room. No average
american is going to be capable of determining if their dog is truly
stable enough to declare there is absolutely no circumstance where
their dog will not attack their child at those young ages.

And for the record, you can answer the door with the child, or the
dog. You can answer the phone while maintaining supervision over the
dog and child. And if you can't watch TV without becoming so
engrossed in it that you won't notice when something bad is about to
happen between your dog and child, then no you better not be watching
TV when they are together. Man made baby gates for a reason.
