Not to mention, a large majority of the dog maulings of children I
have read about, which I read them every day, the parents were at
fault in some way. So, is it ok that they screwed up? No, but it
isn't my fault and it isn't the fault of any other responsible pit
bull owner.

I don't think that it is a "screwup" to leave a child and a dog
together alone. Some (many?) people may disagree, but I know how hard
it is to keep an eye on everything in a house with walls, never mind
separate floors.
I shouldn't have to explain what I mean, but some people will, I
suppose want to make me since they like to be argumentative. Then they
will tell me that I shouldn't answer the 'phone or the door or watch
TV since that takes my attention away from what is important.
is no phone call or door visitor or TV show that will be worth it. A
family I knew lost all three children to drowning in a bathtub when the
mom just ran to get a towel. Another toddler was burned when she turned
on the hot water for the first time when left alone only for a minute
near a shower. Another three year old died in a small amount of water in
a pond (the pond was officially empty but had some water from a recent
rainfall in it) when allowed to play outside alone. There are many many
more such stories. Dog bites are so common, it is amazing. The
statistics only capture a small fraction. The majority of kids I know
who have been bitten never reported anything to anyone. Family dog bites
kid and as long as no stitches are needed, nothing is done except maybe
the dog goes to the pound.
When my children were young, I didn't leave them and dogs alone without
adult supervision. I didn't leave them in the tub without my being right
there, either and I still don't let them swim alone. Nothing I could
tell myself would make it okay for them to be dead when I could have
prevented it so easily. I've seen parents ruined for years under the
guilt and pain just one bad outcome brings even if they did the same
thing repeatedly with no bad outcome. Statistics of likelihood of injury
don't mean much when you are mourning the loss or permanent injury of a
child. It just isn't worth it.
