That doesn't mean they don't *feel* pain, just that they can be damned near
dead before you notice there's anything wrong.
My horse had a high pain threshold, too. High enough that I dismissed a
compound fracture of his right hind leg as a *minor* lameness (slight limp,
a small bloody scrape just above the hock). He was putting weight on the
leg and grazing. Twelve hours later, the fracture had displaced and his
leg was dangling freely. He was still trying to hobble around on it.
If a weenie prey animal can tough out a busted leg like that, don't you
think a tough street-smart dog would have intestines strewn around the
house before she slowed down? We, as the ones with the big, crinkly
brains, should have enough sense and compassion for the animals in our care
to take greater precautions with their health and well-being than they'd
manage on their own.
