I think it's a crock. Not enough time for that. Was the toddler in a
stroller? That could account for it, e.g., scaring the dog. Was the
toddler crying or making toddler sounds, waving his arms around, etc?
That could account for it, perhaps even sounding like prey, etc. Maybe
the toddler's owners spooked the dog, maybe something to do with their
own behavior? Etc.
But I'd bet the farm that a "smell of fear" had nothing to do with it.
Just a poorly socialized, (probably) poorly bred (fear biter?), poorly
trained dog, in the hands of an irresponsible, thoughtless maroon.
Chances are, this wasn't the first time this dog bit someone, either.
I'll never know anything about the toddler's behavior before the attack.
I'm sure that won't be in the news coverage, even if I were to catch
more on the story, and I'm not likely to. I'd go with the idea that the
dog viewed the child as prey. So that wouldn't have been a fear bite.
My only basis for that opinion is that the boy's mother said that they'd
stepped to the side of the path to let the dog by. That doesn't sound
like scary behavior to me. I don't know anything about the dog's biting
history either, but judging from the way the woman cleared out of there
with the dog, it does sound like she had experience with something like
that happening before. I mean, I can't imagine that most people would
have the presence of mind to do that if they were shocked and surprised
by what happened.
You're right. We'll never know for certain what actually did cause
this dog to bite that toddler.
But I'd still bet the farm that it wasn't because of any "smell of
fear."
Toddlers and poorly socialized, poorly trained, poorly bred dogs,
especially in the hands of maroons, is a recipe for disaster.
