This poor baby has probably been punished for not being housebroken. Please
do NOT NOT NOT punish her for any mistakes - you will only make the problem
worse. This is probably the very reason that she was dumped at a shelter in
the first place.
This is the only time that I ever find a Flexi-lead to be useful - get the
longest one you can find. Let her go outside while attached to the Flexi
and let her go around a corner so that she cannot see you. A dog that has
been abused for making a mistake in regard to housebreaking is usually
terrified to go to the bathroom in front of you. They think peeing itself
is the bad act for which they were punished.
Can you imagine thinking that you were going to be punished every time you
had to pee?
Take her to areas where other dogs have peed. Have a friend come over with
their dog and let her watch them pee outside - then praise that dog like
crazy when he/she goes and reward them with a cookie or something.
I know that my neighbors all think that I am crazy when I stand outside with
a new dog and I am saying "Oh what a goooood pee" to my own (already
housebroken) dogs.
If you catch her in the act, make a noise like ah ah ah and hustle her
outside. Please do not yell at her. If she makes a mistake, clean it up
and do not become angry with her.
My latest foster (around six years old) arrived here totally unhousebroken
two weeks ago. She had always lived outside. She is already about 90%
reliable and making progress every day.
Good luck with your new girl and THANKS for adopting her.
Yours in GSDs and rescue,
Lea
