Right.

That's because you're reading the groups on a website. Most of us are
NOT doing that.

What you are most likely seeing is posts made in USENET newsreaders -
an interface and software competely unrelated to the Internet - which
website operators are copying to their sites. This gives uninformed
people the mistaken idea that they're reading web-based "forums" or
"boards".

I'm currently posting through the Google website only because I'm at
work, and our firewall prevents NG access without major tweaking.

I have no idea, because I have no way to know how talkabout's reply
function is set up. I also don't have any way of knowing if your
inability to do is is due to limatations of talkabout's setup, or
whether it's lack of ability/knowlege on your part. (I'm not trying to
be insulting here, btw.)

As Melinda said, this is; try doing a websearch and reading up on it
if you want full information. Here's a place to start:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/what-is/part1/

The short version is that USENET is a network of text-based discussion
groups which predates the WWW (what you're used to thinking of as "The
Internet", and what you're looking at right now).

Outlook - which is part of Microsoft Office - will not read
newsgroups. Outlook Express, which is part of Windows, will. However,
you need to be subscribed to a server to use Outlook, or any other real
newsreading program.
Your ISP (whatever company it is that you use to get access to e-mail
and the Internet, such as MSN, Earthlink, etc.) may also have a USENET
server - check the FAQ on that company's website. If not, you need to
subscribe to an indepedent server.
I'm not aware of any good ones that are currently free, although as
mentioned, news.individual.net is very good and very cheap.

To "killfile" (one word, not two) means having your software set up so
that it blocks or deletes posts (or e-mails) from specific people. You
can't killfile when you read the groups secondhand through a web site.
It's not a program that you can load on your computer.

Again, it means that his posts are blocked from getting to our
newsreader software. We don't see anything he posts unless somebody
else replies to him and is ignorant enough to include his ravings.
