I also read something about the wall aroundTatiana'shabitat being too low.
I mean, HELLO! Tigers are members of the cat family, and cats are naturally
good jumpers. Maybe the zookeepers should have thought of that when they
built the habitat.
I really, really, really am having a VERY hard time understanding WHY
this wall is four FEET shorter than it should be. This is per the
agency that ACCREDITATES zoos, fer cryin' out loud!!! What... this
agency just looked the other way when the awarded the SF zoo its
accreditation???
Even if it's just an "award", so to speak, for the zoo to hang its hat
on, and is not absolutely needed in order for the zoo to operate, not
being accredited by this particular agency (which I forget the name of
at the moment) because of a lower than standard enclosure wall would
have raised some red flags along the way SOMEWHERE, wouldn't you think?!
Also, wouldn't the state have stepped in at some point and shut the
tiger exhibit down until a higher wall was built???!!
Seriously, this whole issue re: the lower than standard wall really,
really befuddles me a lot.
Hi Unka Cory!
I live in SF and have a great affection for our zoo. The cat exhibits
were built in the 1930s-40s as a WPA project and were probably built
to whatever the code was at that time. The problem isn't the height
of a wall it's the depth of a ditch. I don't know what the accrediting
agency looks for but it appears they don't measure moats - I wish they
had, maybe this whole tragedy could have been avoided.
Tatianamay have been a particularly bad-tempered tiger. She attacked
the keeper last year during the public feeding time, when the keepers
get closer than usual. Feeding time is high stress for the animals
and a great crowd pleaser. The public gets to see the cats awake and
active and up close and the lions roar and the cats scarf raw meat and
people love it. The conventional wisdom last year was not to "punish"
her.
I believe the tiger was teased/taunted/provoked into attacking. Bottom
line: she shouldn't have been able to get out BUT I'll bet nothing
would have happened without the taunting.
The politics around this tragedy is staggering. The mayor, the board
of supes, the pro- and anti- zoo crowds are all posturing. It's a
very sad time.
I believe the zoo is safe and will go back when it reopens.

I also tend to believe 50% of what is said about the tiger being taunted,
As do I.
also bearing in mind that the year before, she had attacked a zoo employee
Exactly. Granted, there were steps taken to ensure that, come feeding
time, the same thing wouldn't happen to another keeper that may have
been doing the feeding the NEXT time around. However, wouldn't zoo
officials say to themselves, "We've definitely got ourselves a more
dangerous than usual zoo animal here [if there is such a thing as "more
dangerous" when it comes to zoo animals], so maybe she should be shipped
to a habitat that's better suited for her.", after the very FIRST
attack?!
that was feeding her.
Debby
Much like what's happening with the Bhutto situation in Pakistan, I
believe that more information about the attack by this tiger is going to
become public in the near future that totally contradicts what we know
to be "the truth", so to speak, thus far. There's something that's just
plain weird that doesn't add up, about both situations, if you ask me.

Why would they kill this Tiger? The Zoo should have been prepared for
any situation like this and should have sedated the beautiful Tatiana.
Were the boys throwing things at Tatiana? Were they teasing Tatiana to
provoke such an incident? Why were these kids sitting on the fence?
I don't know that they were sitting on the fence. Aside from
conjecture, I have seen nothing to indicate that they were teasing the
cat or doing anything wrong. All I have seen from eyewitnesses is that
one of the young men was attacked and the other two tried to save him.
It was one of the two who tried to help their friend who was killed. I
think I will wait for evidence before I criticize men who behaved like
that.
I doubt seriously that they would have killed her if they felt that
they had any choice. Sedating her would have been a very difficult
option and risked further harm to humans. This was a tragedy for
everyone involved and the somewhat inadequate enclosure is the only
thing I see that should be blamed.

And now you will run, through a great forest full of snow.
Far from the noise and the humans.
May your journey be smooth and easy.
May the deer not hear you coming and may
You strike with mercifiul swiftness
