I am watching the baseball game on TV-- Mets @ Rockies-- and I can
actually see the smoke.  Unbelievable!
Imagine what it's like when you live in the L.A. area.  The sky
looks as dark as though we were expecting rain, but it's smoke
instead.  I can smell it inside my house, with all the doors and
windows closed.

When I was a kid at school in New Zealand there were big forest fires
in Australia (1962?).  The sky turned brown, and we were 1200 miles
away across an ocean.

And then there's the ash from Krakatoa, which had an eruption in the
1800s that depressed temperatures worldwide for several years.

If you think about the distances involved, it makes the fires (or the
eruptions) all the more awe-inspiring in their power.

Surely you don't remember that? ;o)

Here's something really funny...OR ironic...depending how you look at
it.
When that volcano up in WA, USA was erupting in May, 1980..almost the
exact *same days* we in Miami were undergoing the city-wide riots and
I
lived on the outskirts of one of the riot areas. The docs I worked for
at the
time lived in highrise condos down in Coconut Grove and they said they
could see the burning sections of town all night from their northern-
facing
windows and balconies. After things died down, we found out some old
inactive volcano in WA had suddenly revived, blown up and erupted,
and
killed some old guy that lived on top of it for years.
We were all asking each other, "Who would want to live on top of a
volcano?"
There was a reason behind the riots which many people were not
surprised
caused the violence and destruction. None of us could come up with
*any*
reason anyone sane would want to live on top of a volcano, inactive or
otherwise.
Not that we knew anything about volcanoes, outside of the movies.
