I would recommend that you eliminate *both* of those programs.
Norton, especially, was a great program years ago but is now
bloatware. Avast! and AVG are both good free programs. TrendMicro is
pretty good for a reasonably-priced program that is easy to use.
There are others that are good, but some are not very user-friendly.
Pretty much agree with you.
Norton at its founding was the great leader in PC utilities, but its
antivirus has always been a pain, highly intrusive and hard to get rid of.
I used TrendMicro for awhile at the office but it got "naggy" and I
switched to using AVG Network Edition, which is nice for a group
deployment. It has a central management console where you can set
everything for all workstations from one place. Since I'm familiar with it,
I use that on my home system. The firewall is better than the built-in
Windows firewall, because it warns you when programs try to "dial out", but
lets you approve it permanently once it warns you once. So if some evil
program tries to contact its master, you'll know. (The Windows firewall
only protects you from outside attackers trying to "dial in".)
I've heard good things about Avast.
