I think you are mistaken about Chihuahuas having been bred from
terriers. Terriers were first bred in Europe, and Chihuahuas were first
bred in Mexico. I think they date back to pre-Columbian times.

I agree that the typical Chihuahua personality is rather terrier-like.

If there ancestors were bred to go to ground and kill vermin they are
terriers. Or feists, which are terrier-like dogs. I can't understand
why Daschunds are not classified as terriers. It may be the 'hund' in
the name but that would be silly. They are not employed like hounds at
all. They are terriers.

I understand what you mean, they were bred to work in a similar way to a
terrier, but their temperament is hound-like - soppy and "pretend to be
dumb, you'll get away with it."
They also do not have the wish to fight other dogs that terriers often have,
that "were you just looking at me? if so, I'll have your throat out" thing
is alien for a dachshund.
There are classified as hounds here in the UK.
