Thanks, Mary. I had actually heard this, but for some reason, I am terrified the bed will shift and fall on a cat. Or the cats won't want to sleep with me anymore. But I have been thinking about it lately. It's the same for acid reflux, too (which, of course, I also have). Too bad I left several 4" concrete blocks in the move (but of course).

<snip>I've had X-rays and MRIS and all sorts of fun stuff, revealing all sorts of not-so-fun stuff. I have a hiatus hernia. I have damage to my esophagus from acid reflux (pretty bad damage).<snip>Love to all,

Concerning the hiatal hernia: My mother had a hiatal hernia, which contributed to various uncomfortable side-effects (heartburn, huge amounts of phlegm, etc.). The doctor gave her three suggestions--do not lie down for at least an hour after eating, take a couple of Tums at bedtime, and *always* keep the head of the bed raised. The last of these three suggestions worked wonders. He said to start with precisely 4", then increase it if needed. I found that a pillow or even a wedge between the mattress and box springs did not do much good. However, I found some concrete "blocks" that are exactly 4" thick and placed one under each of the front legs. That worked extremely well. I was my mother's sole caretaker for 5 years. When she became completely bedridden, I finally had to place her in a nursing home. She was there for another 5-3/4 years, and I constantly had to remind staff that the head of her bed *must* be kept in the raised position at all times. The symptoms would return anytime they "forgot" and returned the bed to the flat position.
