Whippets
I don't think they're quite as common here in the states as they are in
the UK. I've never seen one "in person", only on Animal Planet (there
was actually 2 who were rescued here in Houston - on the "Animal Cops
Houston" TV show - they were abandoned in a house by their previous
owners). I couldn't tell if they were that skinny from not being fed
right or if they were just normal for that breed (although you could
see their ribs, so they were probably too skinny).
I agree they are fascinating dogs! Why are you not thinking of getting
any more? Do you think Boyfriend and KFC would not get along with one?
KfC would certainly get along with a whippet, she is d*g friendly and
used to wind around Minnie Whippet's legs when Minnie was in the garden
and she was out there. In a previous home, Minnie had got used to cats.
My other whippets would have killed a cat on sight.
Kitty would probably get used to a d*g, if I insisted on having one.
Boyfriend would be off into the hills if I got a d*g. He still
disappears if I have a human visitor, even if it's June who feeds him
when I am not able to.
Do you think he would run off if it were a puppy? Most cats aren't
intimidated by puppies - they boss them around and then when the dog gets
older it still keeps that place in the "pack" so that it's not a threat
to the much smaller cats.
Anyway, I'm not insisting - you know what's right for your household.
It's just you sound so wistful when you talk about your whippets that I
know you must love them a lot!
could not have a puppy as I am working 5 days a week and out of the house
from 8.15-4.30. I could not possibly housetrain it in those
circumstances, and besides, it would be lonely and destroy the house.
Yep, that's exactly why I don't get a puppy - it wouldn't be fair to the
puppy. Like you, I'll have to wait until I retire before adopting - they
are *so* much more time-intensive than cats (who you just have to point out
a litter box to).
Whippet puppies are very mischievous and agile, they run up the curtains
like kittens, and break into cupboards right up on the wall and eat your
aspirins out of there by chewing through the bottle when you just go to
the shop for a few minutes..
Fortunately they improve with age ;-)
I am not even able to take up June's invitations to see her latest puppies
or her best show dog. It gives me what I call "whippet fever." I must
have one(two), I must have one(two). It's impossible to have just one
whippet.
I'm more than wistful, I have withdrawal symptoms.
I'll have to wait until I retire which is still years away yet, then I
will think about the possibility again.

They sound like fun, though! ;>
