My doctor is now waffling about whether or not I need surgery. Funny, a
month ago he was certain of it. Now I'm getting
double-talk. He says, "You may never have this problem again. Or
it could come back tomorrow. Surgery will fix that, except it could
still come back even with surgery. But it might not. What do you
want to do?" Hello? I think he's figured out I don't have health
insurance. At
least if I decide to have the surgery I won't have to wear a collar
like this kitty!

Admittedly, I was never hospitalized for it, but I've lived with
diverticulosis(itis) for a good many years, now. When I had an
understanding doctor, all it took to cure an attack was some
anti-biotics and an anti-spasmodic.

The last time was a bit worse, since the doctor I went to here in AZ
would not prescribe anything without a colonoscopy, and none could be
scheduled for a couple of weeks! (I figured it would either get
better by itself, or I'd end up in an emergency room where they'd HAVE to
do
something, so decided I'd simply look for another doctor, and forget
the test.)

So long as I avoid sesame seeds and popcorn, it seldom acts up
(although stress has occasionally brought it on, too). The doctor
who wouldn't treat me did mention that a daily dose of soluble fiber
can help avoid attacks (he volunteered the fact that was what he'd
prescribed for his mother). That attack eventually went away, I
started taking a daily dose of Benefibre, and (knock wood) have so far
been free of attacks
since.

Thanks for the info! I'm leaning towards your approach, Evelyn. The
medical bills I already have are staggering. He did tell me to start taking
a fiber supplement (the powered kind) daily and I picked that up yesterday.
He did reiterate if I feel the slightest recurrence of symptoms to call ASAP
so he could phone in a prescription for antibiotics.

Jill

I am assuming, though you did not say so, that you welcome advice.
Here's mine: read carefully Evelyn's last paragraph! Although not
having
the slightest interest, for the 30 years I worked in hospitals, it is
what
I heard, with minor variations, from the horses' mouths...LOL, docs,
that
is, advising patients with your problem: avoid consuming seeds, nuts,
and
popcorn, to avoid the symptoms of *diverticulitis* (the inflammation)
to your
*diverticulosis* (condition where your colon has little "outpockets"
on its
inner parameter walls). Those little food items get stuck in the
outpockets
and that's what starts the inflammation process, which I gather hurts
like
hell. Again, the non-nurse urges those with any interest to consult
online
medical data confirming this. I was the mean "technician" who handed
you
the cup of barium (heavy faintly-flavored pink stuff)l followed the
doc giving
you the test's orders for what films he/she wanted, and made you roll
over
and "assume positions" so your intake of the pink stuff would tell all
on film.
This, LOL, is not done in ERs...but in radiology depts. and offices.
