Ambien is good in that it is non-narcotic (supposedly you can't become
addicted to them, but that issue is moot since I'll have to be on them
every
night for the rest of my life any way). The one thing you have to worry
about with Ambien, however, is that they cause sleep-walking (and talking,
and eating). I had to padlock my bedroom doors (the ones that lead outside
to the spa) and hide the keys because I would wander outside in my sleep
and
I was afraid I would drown in the spa. I've also gotten up and taken a hot
bath, toweled and dressed and gone back to bed without remembering a thing
about it in the morning (oh, right, Ambien also cause memory loss - but
only
during the time you take them, IOW I don't remember anything from 10PM to
6AM, but remember my days just fine). Ben tells me all sorts of
hair-raising stories of what I do during the night that I have no
recollection of the next day!
Catnipped, I'd missed this when I first read it. I thought I was one
of the 'exceptions' (since they like to say this is relatively rare).
When I first began taking Ambien, I'd clean house. No vacuuming (it's
a superstition/cultural thing), but the rest would be done. Dusting,
cleaning windows, spotless house, excepting the vacuum. I couldn't
figure out why I felt more tired than when I went to sleep. Then DH
told me that he had given up trying to make me go back to bed. My
eyes would open, I'd seem like I was awake, except that I didn't make
any sense when he spoke to me (like I do when I'm *awake*?).
That has slowed down considerably (or maybe I've just run down
considerably), but I still do it occasionally. Ginger-lyn, I never
stepped on a cat, nor tripped over the dog, which I do when I'm
ostensibly "awake". Must be the sub-conscious really taking care of
me, which is reassuring. I've showered while asleep, after cleaning,
and even put the towels into the dryer. I'm just a regular cleaning
bee, then I'm suffering, but that's another story.
Wasn't fun, but the house was always clean for company (not that I
ever got any, but I was ready).

When Bandit was still alive, one night, for whatever reason, she absolutely
*savaged* my hand. I woke up the next morning, saw the deep puncture wounds
and slashes, and had no idea what had happened. Ben told me that I'd woken
him up with my yell and he "doctored" my hand for me. I didn't remember a
thing about it. It's kind of scary when you think that even that amount of
pain won't wake you up!
