I popped to the vet place where I get the Hills etc from yesterday

And the nurse had these lovely cards with the Rainbow Bridge and the
poem on them- she was doing a list labelled "PTS-cards". She said
they had three, one with dogs, one with cats and one with no animals
on it at all for those people who have lost any other sort of pet
-she told me they were thinking about getting one with rabbits on
because rabbits are on the increas as pets-and they sent one when a
pet had to be PTS and they'd had two that day and she said she was
expecting a third as one of their patients coming in was a 24-year
old cat with multiple health problems and having talked to the
slaves they were saying it was almost certainly time

Sad but nice of them- my current practice, which I will probably
leave and register with this practice the day Kylie annouces she's
going back to Oz do nothing like that- in fact when Fugazi went a
week or so later they sent me a mailshot thanking for me "for
entrusting us with the care of your pet- may they have a long and
happy life under our care" (I did complain) and when I called to ask
Kylie to take Isis off her list she went out and brought a card
herself to send to us but the practice does nothing like that

Awwwww, that was sweet of her to do that:)
When Mutt, age 19,  went to The Bridge last Dec 9, we didn't even get
a call or a card from that damn TED.  We'll never go there again,
those evil women at the desk charged us $50 for a simple cremation. I'm
still hissed off about that!

When Shmogg was assisted over to the Bridge, it was AUS$90 for the consult
and the injection, and I had a choice of a) take the body home, free b)
Disposal*, $30, c)Cremation via the RPCA** AUS$150 or d)"Personalised
Cremation" *** $270.

A $50 fee sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

* Chucked in a bin and incinerated at the local biological waste disposal
depot.
** They do a 'mass cremation' when they have enough animal carcasses to
justify it. Whilst they say I got hte ashes of Shmogg back, I (and they)
cannot gurantee that 'all' of Shmogg is there nor that I don't have 'some
other ashes' mixed in (although all care is taken, etc etc). I got the ashes
back 5 weeks after he was PTS. It was in a very nice decorated box with
Shmogg's details on it, with the ashes in a sealed bag inside. I was happy
with what they had provided.
*** They would take Shmogg's body and do an individual cremation, returning
the ashes within 3-5 days in a 'personalised urn'. I coudl have even
organised a *funeral* through them - they were very much like a regular
human funeral service. I thought that it was rather excessive and played on
people's vunerability during times of grief. Besides which, I know that with
the RPCA, my money went to helping other animals, whereas had I chosen the
'funeral' service, it would have just gone into someone's pocket. Shmogg
wasn't big on human rituals, so it wouldn't have meant anything to him
anyway.- Hide quoted text -

Fifty dollars doesn't sound bad to me, considering what vet costs are
today. Last cat I had euthanized was $65, for the euthanasia costs
alone, several years ago. ( I cannot believe Cherokee has been gone
eight years) We always bury the pet at home; it's just something we
do.
If I rented a house/apartment, I'd consider cremation though.
