At Long Last

I think with this summer, finally after I think three and a half years,
Molly is finally happy.
She was 1 1/2 when we got her, and had just raised a litter of kittens on
her own. She didn't want to be touched and fought being picked up. She
made it clear early on, that while she would accept food and shelter, she
preferred to spend most of her time out.
There were hints, every once in a while that she wanted more from us. But
it was always one step forward followed by a hasty retreat. I came to
accept that was who she was. But I always felt bad for her. She would
watch us hold and cuddle Jake, but always kept her distance. She was soon
fond of one grandson, but he wasn't always around. But you could see from
the way she adored him, that she wasn't totally opposed to a relationship
with people.
After a while she would sneak into our bedroom at night after we appeared to
be asleep, and curl up on my feet. Like she wanted to be close but not to
be noticed. Once or twice after the first year she jumped into my lap for
just a little while. But only once or twice.
She would let us pet her, sometimes, as long as we didn't pick her up. And
after a while she got to where she would rub against our legs to let us know
she wanted more food, or the door opened.
But with all that she was never really aloof. It was more like she was
sitting on the sidelines wanting.
Over the last three or four months she has gradually warmed up. I don't
really know when things changed. But now I'll be sitting at the computer
and feel the tip of her tail brush the back of my leg. I'll reach down, and
she will stay for scritchins. And instead of only once in a while, now its
several times a day.
She has learned that she likes to be brushed. It means being confined a
little more than she is comfortable with. But she stays until all the loose
fur is cleaned out. I think she likes how it feels after even more than the
brushing.
I spend a lot of time outside when it isn't too hot. She always shows up
now to stay close by. On another chair where she can see us. And again,
gets close if there is a hand she can reach. If its quiet, she will jump up
and lie down on top of me.
It has reached the point where if I'm out, she is there. She will come in
the door with me, and will even let me carry her in at night. She will ask
me to open the gate for her rather than just climb the fences.
And she adores the puppy. Camille has cats at home, but they hiss at her.
Molly follows her around. Touches noses. Plays without claws. Lets
Camille sniff her. They even play chase in the grass sometimes.
I didn't think she would ever be a really comfortable and happy cat, but she
is finally there.
