I just seems to me that the holiday has been reduced to a bunch of people

I know what you mean. I can't stand huge drunken crowds. (Does anyone
actually like them?? Maybe other drunken people...)
For me the issue is not only age, but location. I live in a big city,
so any fireworks event will be crammed with enormous crowds, it will be
impossible to park your car, and many of the people will be obnoxious.
I stopped going to them years ago, although if I have the opportunity
to watch them from someone's house, I do enjoy that.
But I grew up in a small town, and our 4th of July celebrations were
always really fun. I remember driving to some field and lying out on a
blanket with my family to watch the fireworks. It wasn't totally crowded,
or full of unpleasant people. And of course, I was a kid and far less
cranky! The biggest problem was mosquitoes.
Happy 4th, USA'ans,
