My personal opinion just from what I've read -- CN's hubby needs some
counseling. He lost control and hurt someone, and that is never
acceptable. It worries me that he also threw a trash can in her direction
too.

What she SAID was "trash bag", not "trash can" - there's a difference!
(Dunno about you, but the heaviest things in MY trash bags would be a
couple of aluminium cat-food cans and a "baggie" full of solid waste from
the litterbox - hardly likely to injure anyone, even if it could achieve
enough momentum to actually hit them.)

I realize we have a lot of former "battered wives" here (as well as
people who work in the social service agencies that assist them).
However, not EVERY husband who occasionally loses his temper is a
wife-abuser. (And some wives have been known to throw things when angry,
too.)

You have totally missed the point here. Domestic violence is about *power*
and women don't have it. They are usually smaller in build so can be
overpowered easily and most who suffer worst are at home with young children
and need the partner to provide for them.
I am not talking about a man losing his temper. We all do that now and
again. It should not end up with injuries.
It is totally unexcusable, so please don't try and make the excuse that the
woman can sometimes"throw something" as if this is comparable to such as:
Husband comes home very late, and drunk. His dinner was prepared hours
earlier and now it is in the oven to keep warm, and overcooked.
He doesn't like this, takes it out of the oven and throws it against the
wall because it is not to his liking.
His wife gets up from her chair to object. She is holding their 4 week old
baby as she has just been breastfeeding him.
Husband is so annoyed that his food is not right that he gets hold of his
wife by the neck and throws her against the wall. She is stunned and lets
go of the baby who falls against the fireplace, hits his head, and is
killed.
Please don't defend domestic violence in any form.
This really happened.
