I should have known it was coming when Chibi bounded through the open
window with a feather attached to the end of one whisker.

"Chibi, did you just eat a bird?"
"Who, me, Meowmie? No, I just came in for cat food."
"What is that feather doing on your whisker?"
"Feather? What feather?"

Later I went out to pay the newspaper lady. Cherry and Jona were on
porch, sniffing something possessively. I stepped around them to open
the gate. Jona slunk off to next door. Cherry stayed.

I turn around after giving money to newspaper lady. Cherry smiles up
at me. "Here, want some?" Half of small dead bird, very fresh.

"Ewwwwwwww, Cherry, grooooooooossssss!"
"But I saved some for you."
"Cherry, did you kill this bird?"
"For you! Present!"
"Cherry, DID YOU KILL THIS POOR LITTLE BABY BIRD?"
"No. Jona did."
"JONA!"
"No. Cherry did."
"Cherry!"
"No. Chibi did."
"Well, bird-breath, if you think you're sleeping in my bed tonight,
you've got another think coming."

At least they think of me.

We had a sad day yesterday. Three baby birds of some sort. Usually we just
have Jays but the neighborhood is maturing and this year we have breeding
pairs of jays and robins and some sort of back bird and mockingbirds. Plus
hummingbirds. They have to be nesting close by cause they eat here when
they aren't harassing Charlie to refill their feeders.

We have at least the different breeds that use the birdbath in pairs. And
complain if we don't change the water daily. Or more often if it gets
dirty.

There used to be a large pine for them to use for protection, but we had to
have it cut down for our protection.

I've never known our cats to go after nestlings. Their prey of choice is
fledgling that are poor at learning to fly. Since they don't go in for the
kill, I can usually just put them back up on the fence and their parents
will come for them.

Kind of think these three made it to the ground with the help of a competing
species of bird.

Oh we also have pigeons nesting in out palm tree. I had it pruned a year
ago mostly to get rid of the mess from the birds. One baby pigeon was
rescued by the trimmers, and then carted off by Charlie to another bird
lover who hand raised it. A sparrow I would have hand raised myself. But a
pigeon?
