Doctors Check Role Of Cats In Bird Flu Spread
NEW YORK -- Researchers think some people who let their cats roam free should bring them inside to prevent the spread of bird flu.
But American cat owners need not worry: This advice applies only to areas where the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has been found in poultry or wild birds.
Researchers writing in the journal Nature said cats can be infected with the virus, and experiments have shown they can give it to other cats.
But they say no one knows if cats can transmit the virus to humans or birds.
The researchers recommended that cats be kept away from infected birds or their droppings, and they recommend quarantine if felines come in contact with the virus.
The deadly strain surfaced in Asia in 2003. It has recently spread to Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
