I would only lock him in as your vet recommended at mealtimes. Give him time
to eat and do his business, then let him out. I would also go into the room
with him and pet him while he is eating, then leave for maybe 15 minutes,
come back and see if he has used the box, if not, leave him a bit longer.
Make sure the box is clean so you can see when there's a new poop in it.
