No, my daughter will get a check from FEMA (just the same as a homeless
person who used to live in the streets of New Orleans will). You don't need
to own a home to qualify. Technically, I could apply also as the lessor
(with my daughter being the lessee) for the loss of my house, but then I
would have to share *that* check with my ex, and I won't do it just for
spite. He owes me $60,000 in unpaid child support (but for a "lien" you
have to re-submit the suit every 5 years and I never bothered to do that
since I knew I wouldn't get any money from him anyway and that would have
just wasted my money on legal fees). But I talked to a lawyer way back
before I let that suit lapse and he said that even so that's a different
issue from property settlement and I couldn't use that non-payment as a
"payment" to him for his half of the house. He won't come back into
Louisiana even if I offered to pay him for his half because he has a
"Contempt of Court" warrant out against him (for a non-payment of child
support hearing that he just didn't show up for - weird, but "Contempt of
Court" is the only civil crime that does *NOT* have a statute of
limitations - he could go back 50 years from now and still be arrested for
it).

And my daughter says the pictures just don't convey the extent of the
devastation. She says there aren't any colors left in St. Bernard, that it
is just all shades of gray. She said it's like travelling to another world.
She has a lot more pictures of just the Parish and well-known places there,
but I haven't had a chance to post those yet.

<SIGH> I *WISH* I could talk them into moving to Houston. But they are
determined to live in "New Orleans" (meaning one of the parishes ourside of
the city), but not in that house. That house will have to be bull-dozed and
since they don't own the property it will be easier for them to just
purchase another house elsewhere or build a new house elsewhere.
