The evidence of either being toxic to birds is suspect, however at
this stage, no one is excited about experimenting on very expensive
birds to find out. Such experiments run into a brick wall called the
ethics committee.
Chocolate contains several drugs (theobromine, caffeine, tyramine and
phenylethylamine) that are pharmacologically active stimulants) that
are suspected of being dangerous to birds. The actual evidence of
toxicity in birds however is notably accident.
As the late Dr. TJ Lafeber told me in the 1970's, if it is good for
you to eat, it is probably good for the bird as well....
